I promised you a good May sale and that’s what we have got for you.  It’s on May 29th at 11am with viewing the day before, 1-7, and on sale day from 9.30am.  LOTs OF PICS. ON THE BLOG AND MORE ADDED DAILY.

THIS SALE INCLUDES MARK AND PERIOD CHINESE PORCELAIN, VIVIENNE WESTWOOD FASHION, A VERY FINE AND RARE CARPET, GREAT BOXES, THE MOST DECORATIVE TABLE LAMP I’VE EVER HANDLED, GREAT DESIGNER AND TRADITIONAL JEWELLERY, GOOD FURNITURE AND MORE.

What makes a good sale is what the house visits reveal.  A particular home in Moor Park, quintessentially English decoration at its best, has given us the best oriental carpet we’ve handled for 20 years.  It’s a large Heriz silk rug from North-West Persia, c.1870, and the Imperial Chinese yellow ground is decorated with fruit, animals, birds and foliage.It’s delightful and justifies viewing. It measures 268 x 171 cm.  With slight condition issues and carries a £5000-£8000 estimate.  It was last sold as lot 18 in Sothebys Fine Rug sale on the 15th October 1997. From the same home we have a delightful small Louis XV marquetry table with two drawers signed by C. Wolff, purchased at the Koller auction in Zurich on the 7th May 1982 as lot 2637.  The many other items include fine Chinese mark and period porcelain, a pair of late 19th century Derby pots on stands and a late 18th century plate painted with flowers.A charming and decorative item is a wooden swan carved and signed by Guy Taplin and we have a delightful group of five Chinese floral watercolours.

FURNITURE includes a fine George III mahogany centre table, the rectangular top on fluted supports and downswept legs. It was purchased from Richard Courtney and came from Lord Camoys at Stonor Park. From the same clearance comes a Cotswold school oak wardrobe and Globe Wernicke bookcases.  Otherwise the small furniture section includes an 18th century marquetry cabinet, with urn, cherub and flower inlay, on claw feet, a continental style vitrine, an early 19th century mahogany military chest in two parts, George III floral carved gilt frame mirror, a most interesting leatherbound linen chest worked by Miss Joan Wilson of Northumberland in pressed leather, c.1920, a tall George III mahogany chest of two short and five long drawers on bracket feet. 20th century furniture includes a large black marble-topped coffee table, a pair of 19th century Anglo-Indian carver chairs, a suite of lacquered furniture by Pierre Vandel, Paris, a good three-piece suite on mahogany frame, a two-seater white leather settee, a pair of old re-upholstered brown leather club armchairs and matching settee, a flat top oak roll-top desk, a 19th century mahogany games table, crossbanded in rosewood, on turned fluted legs,an  early 18th century oak bureau cupboard with serpentine internal fittings, a Georgian crossbanded mahogany and oak corner cupboard, a metal-framed mid-20th century garden table and 6 wirework style chairs, a carved oak desk with superstructure, a 19th century Flemish heavily carved light oak court cupboard, a 19th century carved oak desk with carved head pulls, a Victorian bamboo whatnot, 2 Victorian stick-back Windsor armchairs,
a marble console table on a carved oak leaf and acorn frame,a good 19th century satinwood Wellington chest and another, a  Heal’s sideboard, a cream and gilt bedroom suite, an Eavestaff mini piano, a large extending 19th century dining table to seat 12, and plenty more.

COLLECTABLES include a good Victorian 24 tune cylinder music box, c.1860, on original stand, MAINLY FROM A FULHAM HOME, GOOD BOXES including a 5 drawer collector’s box, a Victorian walnut smoker’s cabinet of 3 drawers, a fabulous Victorian lacquered and mother-of-pearl inlaid table sewing cabinet – one of my favourites – an Indian Colonial ivory and satinwood sarcophogus box, a late 18th century Russian casket mounted in bone, a 19th century black lacquer sewing box painted with chinoiseries, a Japanese Shibayama inlaid ivory box, decorated with cockerels, flowers and birds, a late 19th century Anglo-Indian sadeli-work box with satinwood lining, a 19th century Sri Lankan tortoiseshell and ivory box,  writing boxes, a mahjong set, boxed, and more boxes. CLOCKS include a good 19th century drop-dial wall clock with convex glass, a 30 hour mahogany longcase clock, 19th century, by H. Harris, a 19th century mahogany North of England longcase clock with moon phase, seconds and date, swan neck pediment, good carriage clocks, a German Art Nouveau oak wall clock, interesting mantel clocks incl. an inlaid marble clock suite, a Comptoise wall clock, Art Deco mantel clocks, from a Chiswick home a fabulous Victorian barometer by H. Hughes, 59 Fenchurch Street, London, in an ornate carved frame.

OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST include a wonderful Chinese embroidered panel in metal thread,in a bamboo carved frame, an old Chinese iron figure of a child with evidence of gilding, a fabulous large American gilt metal table lamp c.1940, combining a Lalique style opalescent glass parrot framed in ivy, a needlework picture of HMS Cressey, 81 guns, and another of gunship and castle 1863, a needlework picture of a falcon, a John Speed map of Oxfordshire 1605, with college crests, an extensive Halcyon Days enamel box collection, an extensive Jasper ware collection of miniatures with coats of arms, a decorative display of 8 plaster of Paris medallions around a central medallion of Napoleon and consort, extensive brass and copper wares, decorative chess set, a W Watson & Son microscope and an old adding machine, a brass hearth set, an inlaid wooden humidor, pouch and cutters, an old violin, a silver flute from Stanley Toulson in case, a bronze and ivory figure of a girl musician, signed Alonzo and a well patinated bronze of a satyr riding a turtle supporting a conch shell, a gilt spelter figure of a semi-clad lady on a stand, good carved ivory figures and ornaments, old cameras incl. a Rolleiflex camera and a Pentax camera, an old German doll with original leather shoes, another marked AM370 with closing eyes and leather limbs, and a collection of scent bottles.

JEWELLERY is a great section and could be a sale on its own with one estate entering about 100 pieces including 25 silver Celtic brooches and 17 gold gem set brooches, pendants, necklets, watches, a 15ct gold curb link bracelet, a gold charm bracelet, a gold propelling pencil, gold sovereigns, a gold Maharaja Dupont lighter in original box, enamelled pieces, extensive and interesting costume jewellery, two large modern and stylish silver crosses and a silver Vivienne Westwood ring.

SILVER AND PLATE is extensive and includes a 5 piece tea service by Hector Miller(pupil of Stuart Devlin), 3 two-sconce wall lights, table wares, candlesticks, tea services and flatware.

PICTURES is a 75 lot section including: Walter Simon, Cosmo Neville, John Bampfield, J. Ward, H. Knight, H. Schaefer, V. Trnski, J. Maurice Hoskins, A. Schuhknecht, John Lynn, Bernard Partridge, John Brunsden, Thomas Churchyard, David Shepherd, Anthony Gibbs, H. Johannsen and 12 Islamic paintings.

COSTUME includes a Queen of Hearts velvet jacket with train by Vivienne Westwood – it’s wonderfully outrageous – a pretty Vivienne Westwood coat, Vivienne Westwood patent platform shoes (size 5), 2 fabulous furs and other furs, a large collection of hats, etc.

TOYS, BOOKS & RECORDS includes a large quantity of model cars in blister packs and loose, an  extensive record collection incl. 78 rpm, old games, Hornby and Tri-ang railway,  Folio editions, etc.

ORIENTAL CARPETS  are everywhere including the fabulous, rare and important Heriz silk rug with Imperial yellow ground, c.1870.

GENERAL EFFECTS includes garden ornaments, white goods, garden furniture, shipping furniture etc.
